Unreadable figures, boxes and question marks instead of Devanaagarii:

Problem:

Instead of Devanagari (देवनागरी, Devanāgarī) / Sanskrit (संस्कृत्, Saṁskr̥t) text you see boxes and question marks.

Cause:

It looks like there is a problem with the coding and decoding of the symbol set in your web browser.

Solution:

Change the symbol set coding and decoding on your web browser to UTF

  • FireFox: View -> symbol coding (Character Encoding) -> Unicode (UTF-8)
  • Internet Explorer: View -> Encoding -> Unicode (UTF-8)

Incorrect consonant identification and rotated vowels:

Problem:

Devanagari (देवनागरी, Devanāgarī) symbols are displayed, but the identification (link) is wrong and some letters are mixed up. Vowels for instance are always displayed to the right of the corresponding consonant. This problem usually only occurs in FireFox and not in Internet Explorer.

Cause:

There appears to be insufficient support of complex typefaces in your operating system (Complex script support). Internet Explorer usually doesn’t have this problem, as it uses a "Uniscribe Engine" which isn’t available to other operating systems.

Solution:

In order to be able to read Devanagari (देवनागरी, Devanāgarī) correctly in the whole operating system, install the complex script support in your operating system:

  • Windows XP: Start -> Administration -> Regional and Language Options -> languages -> Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages -> Follow the further instructions of your operating system. It is possible that you need the installation CD and to restart your computer.

It’s still not working?

Problem:

Instead of Devanagari (देवनागरी, Devanāgarī) there are still boxes and question marks on the screen.

Cause:

This page is using a lot of Unicode (UTF-8) script. This script must be installed on your computer.

Solution:

Install the appropriate script:

Windows 2000:

  1. Load the script onto your computer (as well as the .zip data, that contains the script) and save it temporarily e.g. on your desktop.
  2. Open the "Font" file: Start -> Control Panel -> Fonts
  3. Drag the font data (not the .zip file) into the font file.
  4. It is necessary to restart the computer for the font to be recognised.

Windows XP:

  1. Load the script on to your computer (as well as the .zip data, that contains the script) and save it temporarily e.g. onto your desktop.
  2. Open the "Font" file: Start -> Control Panel -> Appearances and Themes -> Fonts.
  3. Drag the font data (not the .zip file) into the font file.
  4. It is necessary to restart the computer for the font to be recognised.

Mac OSX:

  1. Load the script on to your computer (as well as the .zip data, that contains the script ) and save it temporarily e.g. onto your desktop.
  2. Load the script data in to your "Font Book"
  3. Click on "Install Font"

There is a good selection of free scripts for Sanskrit (संस्कृत्, Saṁskr̥t) / Devanagari (देवनागरी, Devanāgarī) on the webpage South Asian Language Resource Center - University of Chicago: salrc.uchicago.edu/resources/fonts/available/sanskrit/

Even better?

Problem:

Although you have selected a nice script for Devanagari (देवनागरी, Devanāgarī) , the text is displayed in another script that is not so nice.

Cause:

This font is selected in your web browser to display Devanagari (देवनागरी, Devanāgarī) .

Solution:

You can define which font in your web browser is used to display Devanagari (देवनागरी, Devanāgarī) :

  • Internet Explorer 6: Extras (Tools) -> Internet options -> General -> Fonts. Now select Devanagari in the "Language Script" pulldown menu and define one of the fonts available on your system for Devanagari.
  • Firefox 1.5: Tools -> Options -> "Content" - tab -> "Fonts and Colours" -> Advanced. Now select Devanagari in the "Fonts for" pulldown menu and define one of the fonts available on your system for the various options, like Serif, Sans Serif, Monospace, etc.
  • Opera 9: Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced - tab -> Fonts -> International fonts. Now select Devanagari in the dropdown menu and define an appropriate script.
